The Big Rock skiing area advertises itself as “a big mountain experience with a small town feel” – and no one can actually say that it isn't accurate. Most of its trails are geared towards the intermediate skier, but given that it has about 60 acres worth of skiable area (including areas for cross-country skiing), it's not going to be much of a problem. For all that, Big Rock strives to make itself accessible to all who wish to engage in winter sports. An advocate of winter sports promotions, Big Rock hosts annual winter sports races as well.

Attitash is considered the biggest skiing resort in New Hampshire, with two mountains connected to its name. This of course means that there is a large number of possibilities with regards to the variety of their 70 trails and terrains, enough to satisfy skill levels from beginner to expert – although there are more trails for the intermediate skier. The trails, terrains, and glades are, of course supported by the most powerful snowmaking system in the state, so you'll be sure to find a well-groomed and maintained trail for your vacation.

Echo Valley is one of those understated wilderness wonderlands that more people should know about, really. Don't let the fact that it's a family-type ski area fool you – Echo Valley has a decent number of steeps that are suitable for more experienced skiers. And although it's said that Echo Valley is great for those who are just learning how to ski, the trails are enough to tucker out even the experts – not because it's particularly challenging, but because it's fun.

Boreal Mountain Resort is the home of the first and only all-mountain terrain park in Northern California. Pro Snowboarder David Benedek, the producer of 91 Words for Snow, was all praises for Boreal. Clearly, this resort is worth checking out.

Mount Rose Ski Resort has the highest base elevation in the Tahoe Basin (7,900 feet), and it really does have some of the cleanest snow and best runs you can hope to find in the area. It has more than sixty trails over its 1,800 feet worth of vertical drop already, and most of them are for the more skillful skiers – so yes, those who like a challenge will love this place. Mount Rose also has 2 terrain parks, and offers lessons for first-time skiers of all ages.
