1. Baker Mountain
Baker Mountain in Bingham, Maine is one of those ski areas that one would consider cozy. It's only a four-trail downhill ski affair, and it runs a very, very good ski school when regular schools are closed. Nevertheless, this ski area maintains a soft spot in the hearts of more sentimental leisure skiers who are in on the activity for the fun of it, and not for the adrenaline. It's one of the better rural ski places you can hope to find.

2. Big Rock
The Big Rock skiing area advertises itself as a big mountain experience with a small town feel and no one can actually say that it isn't accurate. Most of its trails are geared towards the intermediate skier, but given that it has about 60 acres worth of skiable area (including areas for cross-country skiing), it's not going to be much of a problem. For all that, Big Rock strives to make itself accessible to all who wish to engage in winter sports. An advocate of winter sports promotions, Big Rock hosts annual winter sports races as well.

6. Eaton Mountain
Eaton Mountain is a year-round resort, but in our opinion it only truly shines in the winter when we get to ski there. It's a fairly modest family-run business, but with an area that is varied enough to accommodate the beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers, who can complain? Besides, it has 622 vertical feet worth of skiing area that you can take advantage of at night yes, they offer night skiing, too. The fact that they're also one of the earliest ski resorts to open its ski facilities in Maine is also a plus.

The area is ideal for Nordic skiing, and the natural snowfall makes the experience of skiing there even better.

8. Lost Valley
The Lost Valley Ski Area may be just that a ski area but it doesn't mean that it couldn't put up a fight as a ski destination. It boasts of fifteen trails, after all, and has a really good terrain park that could be used for both skiing and snowboarding. While some argue that most of the ski trails at the Lost Valley Ski Area are disappointingly for beginners and intermediates only, it should be pointed out that the advanced and expert trails are actually pretty challenging for skiers of that level. The Lost Valley Ski Area also plays host to one of the largest ski schools in Maine.
