1. Alpine Valley

Alpine Valley is situated in White Lakes, Michigan. It is reputed to be the biggest ski area in Southern Michigan, hosting a total of 25 runs, which are all serviced by 10 chairlifts and rope tows. They also have a halfpipe, measuring a length of 350 feet and a height of 10 feet. Throughout the whole terrain are strategically placed ramps, rails and launches. The scenery itself is stunning, where a line of trees grace the slopes, giving the whole resort a rather picturesque quality to it. Beginners, intermediate and expert skiers will have something to suit their preferences in this beautiful place. They also offer skiing and snowboarding lessons, with their “Gold Merit” Instruction Center, which is staffed by a competent group of well-trained instructors.

2. Apple Mountain Ski Resort

Apple Mountain Ski Resort is siutated in the heart of middle Michigan. It has a total of 12 splendid runs, serviced by 6 modern ski-lifts. It's mountains ski areas are a mix on red and black ski trails and blue and green slopes. It makes use of both seasonal snow and snowmaking devices, to create the perfect blend of snow for all skiers and snowboarders. It features slopes and trails from beginner to intermediate skill levels. While it is smaller than an average ski resort, it has the greatest altitude difference among other ski areas within a 50 mile radius. Basically, Apple Mountain is a ski resort primarily targeting casual skiers, a fun place to hang out in while working out at the same time.

3. Al Quaal Recreation Ski Area

Al Quaal Recreation is a sprawling 300-acre natural park which overlooks Teal Lake. Its skiing methods and style is reminiscent of earlier, hardier forms of winter sports that were introduced by the Scandinavians. It has a 1,200 foot iced toboggun run that is opened only on specific times, and provides a refreshing change from the standard commercial skiing runs. The toboggun is adjacent to the more traditional downhill ski runs and slalom runs, which are lined with lit ropes. It has diverse difficulty levels for its terrain-- which makes it an all-around skiing resort for any skill level. Lastly, they serve hot food and drinks within the premises, allowing for some warm downtime after a skiing workout.

4. BlackJack Ski Resort

While BlackJack Ski Resort is blessed with over 200 inches of annual snowfall, they still make an effort to perfect their slopes with plenty of artificial snow. In fact, they've practically elevated the process of creating snow into an art form, with their elaborate snow making system and unparalleled efforts in providing the best conditions in the Midwest. They pay special attention to their customers suggestions and preferences. Skiers or boarders will have little to complain about, especially when they get a taste of the finest mix of hard and easy terrains and runs, while taking in a spectacular view of the Ottawa National Forest. BlackJack is serviced by its own surface lift, allowing for more turns down the slopes for maximum enjoyment.

5. Boyne Mountain

Boyne Mountain is situated in Northern Michigan, near Boyne City and was among the first to be developed in the region when the skiing industry had just started booming. Aside from skiing and snowboarding, the resort also offers golf, tubing, fine dining, an indoor water park and a spa. It's lodge, the Grand Mountain Lodge, has been recently completed to allow better service for their skiing patrons. It hosts many annual activities and programs, such as the Carnival weekend and the Slush cup. It has a full range of services including ski and snowboarding rental and repairs, as well as specialty shops and child care. It has a total of 11 lifts to service its ever expanding runs and trails.

6. Big Powderhorn Mountain Snow Ski Resort

Big Powderhorn Mountain Ski Resort is situated in Bessemer, Michigan. It hosts a total of 27 ski trails which are all serviced by 10 lifts. It is a favorite of locals in the upper midwest, especially families, due to its wide array of activities-- from the basic Big Bird to the headwall of Cannonball, to the vertical drop and black diamond runs. It has one of the highest vertical drops in the midwest-- towering at 600 feet. Most of its snow is artificially made, in order to better control the slope conditions. It's 27 trails lead to endless varieties of runs, and 252 acres of skiable land. They also offer other recreational activities apart from skiing-- which include NASTAR, an ice skating rink, ice fishing, snow mobiles, horse drawn sleighs, and cross country trails.

7. Cannonsburg Ski Area

Cannonsburg Ski area is situated along Cannonsburg, near the Grand Rapids town in Michigan. It has the highest vertical drop in Southwest Michigan, at 250 feet. Its dedication to safety and cleanliness is only matched by their services. It is continuously groomed, with the extensive snowmaking systems providing good quality snow for maximum skiing satisfaction, no matter what skill level their patrons are in. It also has a solid capacity to bring skiers up the slopes with its quad, triple and double chairs and rope tows. They offer attractive packages and rates, especially on Sundays, and they host several events, such as the CUSSA racing action, the Women's Ski Retreat, Mighty Mite Awards, and many more. Lastly, they also offer comprehensive skiing lessons, for those who can afford them.

8. Marquette Mountain

Marquette Mountain is the largest day skiing area in the UP, with plenty of combined natural snow and superb artificial snow to make skiing a better experience for every patron. Marquette has over 25 runs and more than 600 feet of vertical drops, enough surface area to keep even the hardiest skiers busy. The whole mountain encourages family and group get-togethers, if the many on-mountain picnic sites are any indication. Marquette also offers night skiing for those who prefer skiing with little crowds, under a blanket of stars. It has 4 lifts to service its 25 runs, which range from beginner level slopes to expert trails.

9. Mount Brighton

Mount Brighton is situated in southeastern Michigan. It has twenty-six trails, serviced by a stunning 17 lifts, and provides skiing areas of all manner of difficulty, from beginning to expert. It has 100% snowmaking coverage which stretches to 130 skiable acres. Apart from being a skiing resort, it also offers skiing lessons in their Ski School, which teaches alpine skiing and snowboarding for all ages. Other lessons, such as snow racing is available upon request. The resort itself has no lodge of its own, but has an affiliation with two nearby motels, which offer very reasonable packages to those who prefer staying overnight and taking advantage of the night skiing.

10. Shanty Creek Ski Resort

Shanty Creek Ski Resort is part of the many attractions offered by Shanty Creek Resorts-- the other attractions including a first-class golf club and course. The ski resort has a total of 400 acres of skiable terrain, all of which are well-groomed and in top condition. It has a total of 46 slopes, serviced by 11 lifts, which more or less guarantees a satisfactory trail to anyone, regardless of skill level. The snow in the area gets quite deep- around 17 feet each season, which just goes to work in the mountain's favor. Shanty Creek maintains a warm, friendly atmosphere, which makes it easy for most skiers to feel at home with it. It's vertical drop is medium at best-- measuring to 450 feet, but its insane diversity of trails and top-notch snow quality more than compensate for it.
